Now You Know

Now You Know

(oehler/goedken)
As melting dawn finally breaks
And we rise to tear down the ice
As we process, unlock and purge
The whole litany of our mistakes

What do you want me to say?
How the ground moves beneath my feet
That it’ll always be this way?
How only with you am I complete?

I suppose that now you know
Not to say it to my face
Protect me from eyeline’s glow
Keep lock and tumblers in place
I suppose that now you know
Not to speak it any more
Isolate the ice below
Pretend the oath you swore

When the spinning wheel shakes loose
And we hold to sharpened spokes
As we clear, refine, consume
The vast variety of our misuse

What do you want me to say?
That gravity pulls us all
That it’s always been this way?
How only with this will I forestall?

I suppose that now you see
How to climb inside my heart
Fingers twist and turn the key
Prep system for engine start
I suppose that now you know
Not to wait here any more
Recreate the virgin snow
Where there’s nothing to explore

As fires take their hold
And I see majestic lines
Rebuilding with purity
From cold destiny that was foretold

What do you want me to say?
How streams ran beneath this street
That it’ll always be this way?
That nothing now will cause me defeat?

I suppose that now you know
Not to say it to my face
Gamble far from fortune’s pull
Keep lock and tumblers in place
I suppose that now you know
Not to speak it any more
Isolate the ice below
Pretend the oath you swore
