The One Who Came After Me
He’s shorter than me
he has abhorrent political views
Nevertheless now he’s the man
Sleeping with you
Was it something I did or
Something I said?
Was I not quite enough or
Were you easily led?
(Were you?)
He’s the one who came after me
He’s a late arrival on the scene
If I knew this was coming
To see this in the cards
Knowing where this was headed
Would it hit me so hard?
To know where this was going
With nothing to deny
If I knew this was coming
Would I have said goodbye?
He’s older than me
He’s had a series of dead end jobs
His prospects are dim and
Might I add, he’s a bit of a slob?
I don’t understand by
What light you see
Since none of these men can
Hold a candle to me
(Can they?)
He’s the one who came after me
He’s a late arrival on the scene
If I knew this was coming
And saw it was our fate
Knowing this was coming
Would it still be too late?
To know where this was headed
With nothing to deny
If I knew this was coming
I could have said goodbye
He’s richer than me and he
Still has all of his hair
His future is bright
This guy is off and he’s going somewhere
Why in the world did you
Settle here for me?
Given a man
Of such fine quality
(Seriously, why?)
He’s the one who came before me
I’m a late arrival on the scene
If we knew this was coming
And saw this in the cards
Knowing where this was headed (Tell me)
Would it catch you off guard?
To know where this was going
With nothing to deny
If I knew this was coming
I would have said goodbye
[EO] Another song that went through several permutations before I could settle on a style.
The outline of the lyrics had been rattling around in my brain for a while, but I could never quite pin down how to complete them and round them out. So I sent what I ahd to Eric G, who gave them the once-over and returned something orders of magnitude more coherent than what I sent him.
