Word and Deed

Word and Deed

(oehler/goedken)

l like to know that this town is cold
While it keeps me full and strong
Sleek with pride and growing hope
Yet still and weak as a frail, old pope

I like to know that there’s nothing I need
when there’s no one left in this town
Whose mouth is dry
And whose belly is full
when there’s no one left around

Trampled by this pounding steed
Finished off by word and deed
Trampled by this youthful need
Broken down by word and deed

There is no one else around
There is not a soul in this town
Where days are short
And nights are strong
While I’ve been cheating all along

I like to know that there’s nothing I need
when there’s no one left in this town
Whose mouth is dry
And whose belly is full
when there’s no one left around

Trampled by this pounding steed
Finished off by word and deed
Trampled by this youthful need
Broken down by word and deed

That’is why this town is old
That’s why this town is cold
That’s why this town has crime
Why I’ve been cheating all the time

I like to know that there’s nothing I need
when there’s no one left in this town
Where days are short
And nights are strong
And I’ve been cheating all along.

[eo] This one is in a tough key for my voice. I don’t know quite why I picked it.

The song foreshadows a lot of what Null Device would become – it’s a lot less synthpop than the other tracks on the album, has more of a driving beat, and a mess of tabla.

The video for it is very cool.
