David Bowie, 1947-2016.

Jan 11, 2016

It’s weird. I’m at a bit of a loss about what to say about David Bowie’s death. I’ve never been a “superfan”, but I always had a massive amount of admiration for the man. I guess the best I can do is talk about what he and his art meant to me personally.

The 2015 Nully Awards

Dec 28, 2015

The Good Album of The Year Chvrches – Every Open Eye I cannot overstress how much I love this album. Hell, I even like the tracks where Lauren Mayberry doesn’t sing. It is an extremely catchy album from start to finish. Don’t Call it a Comeback award New Order – Music Complete Dogged by rumours […]

The 2014 Nully Awards: The Inevitable and Overly-Specific Year-End Wrapup

Dec 18, 2014

The good, the bad, the ugly, and the slightly irrelevant.   The Good: Best Album I Released All Year Null Device – Aphelion Finally deciding to play to our native strengths – soulful synthpop with lots of strings – it’s probably the best thing we’ve done, ever. I say that every time we release an […]

The 2013 Nully Awards

Dec 8, 2013

The annual, absurdly specific, woefully incomplete wrapup to music this year.   The Good Believe the Hype Award: CHVRCHES – The Bones Of What You Believe It’s insanely catchy, it’s well-written, well-programmed, well-mixed, and Lauren Mayberry’s voice is a perfect balance of soulful and twee for the music.  One of my favorite albums of the […]

5Thoughts on "Delta Machine"

Thoughts on "Delta Machine"

Mar 26, 2013

It’s no secret that I’m a longtime depeche Mode fan. I’ve seen them in concert many times, I went to the midnight release parties, I’ve fronted depeche mode cover bands, I’ve designed dM-inspired fonts. I’ve pretty much stuck with them through thick and thin for, well, all of  of my adult life, and a good […]

Revisiting the Classics: Violator (1991)

Aug 18, 2011

The other day my iPod shuffled up “Enjoy The Silence” and I thought to myself, “you know, I haven’t really sat down and listened to Violator in its entirety in years.”  I thought it might be an interesting experiment – since I loved the album when it came out, but that was 20 years ago […]

The 08 Mix

Jan 1, 2009

Every year I try to throw together a mix CD for friends.  I ran out of time this year and wasn’t able to burn the dozens I usually do. Then I thought “wait a minute, this year I actually have storage and bandwidth to burn.”  And since I’ve always made A Thing about the band […]

So many demos

Sep 3, 2003
At the behest of our fearless label-honcho, we've been assigned to review a few demos she's been sent. There are some damn good ones in there. There are some not so damn good ones in there. At the risk of being impolitic, I have one suggestion for people making new music: please, please stop trying [...]
