Footfalls
(oehler/goedken)
Crimson flags they fly
burning childhood
consumed with passions
promised in light
crimson pyres rise
floating through air
disposed by nothing
promised in light
I was drawn in
a moth to a flame
I was a pawn in
an unprincipled game
belief and need
the dagger and shield
truth, word and deed
the arms that we wield
Footfalls that I hear
footfalls in the night
in the beat of my heart
or do the come for me?
footfalls that I hear
footfalls in the night
the wind is at my back
here they come for me
I was drawn in
a moth to a flame
my role forgone in
the words of my name
science and art
the dagger and shield
prayer and heart
the arms that we wield
Footfalls that I hear
in each beat of my heart
footfalls in the night
here they come for me
footfalls that I hear
in each beat of my heart
footfalls in the night
…they come for me.
[EO] This song probably came together faster than anything else I’ve written. Goedken sent me the lyrics and I think after about a weekend I’d banged this out. It just…happened. There was a vaguely Curve element to it, and the distorted electric bass and the opening modulated synth riff are sort of homages to “Missing Link.” Everything else…well, I don’t know where it all came from. But it stood up to repeated listenings and required very little re-arranging and tweaking after the fact.
[EG] Inspired by the life of Gunther Stent.
